List of How to Choose the Best Trucking Company for You...

You can use this list when talking to recruiters for your next trucking job...

1. The Financial Needs (Beyond Just CPM)

Drivers know that a high "Cents Per Mile" (CPM) is worthless if the truck is sitting still.

  • Guaranteed Minimum Pay: "Do I get paid if the truck breaks down or freight is slow?"
  • Detention & Layover Pay: "Will you pay me for sitting at a shipper for 6 hours?"
  • Per Diem: Tax-free allowance for food/travel.
  • Benefits Package: 401k match, health insurance (day 1 vs. day 90), and paid vacation.
  • W-2 vs. 1099: Many drivers specifically look for one or the other depending on their tax strategy.

2. The Lifestyle & "Quality of Life" Needs

This is usually the top reasons why drivers quit.

  • Pet & Rider Policy: "Can I bring my dog?" or "Can my wife ride along?"
  • Touch vs. No-Touch Freight: Older drivers or those with injuries specifically hunt for "100% No-Touch."
  • Drop & Hook %: Drivers hate waiting for live loads. They want to drop the trailer and go.
  • Running Area (Lanes): Some drivers refuse to drive in the Northeast (NYC/Jersey) or the Mountains (Rockies). They need "No East Coast" jobs.
  • Hometime Consistency: It’s not just "home weekends"; it’s "Will I be home for my kid's game every Friday?"

3. The Equipment Needs (Comfort = Retention)

The truck is their home. Old, broken equipment is a dealbreaker.

  • Truck Age: "2024 or newer."
  • Amenities: APUs (Auxiliary Power Units for AC/Heat when parked), Inverters (for microwaves/TVs), and Refrigerators.
  • Governed Speed: Drivers hate being capped at 62mph. They search for "Ungoverned trucks" or "70mph trucks."
  • Transmission: Manual vs. Automatic. (Old school drivers want Manual; new school wants Auto).
  • In-Cab Technology: Do they have driver-facing cameras? (Many drivers refuse to work for companies with driver-facing cameras).

4. The Respect & Culture Needs

This is hard to quantify but easy to write about.

  • No Forced Dispatch: "Do I have the right to refuse a load that is unsafe or bad for my paycheck?"
  • Dispatcher Ratio: How many drivers does one dispatcher handle? (Lower is better).
  • Review/Reputation: What are other drivers saying about the company?
